Back in July, GooSync offered a deal to existing customers, where they could purchase a lifetime subscription to GooSync for just a few dollars more than the cost of a 2 year subscription.
That means a lifetime subscription for around $40 USD (since our dollar has shrunk against the Euro so badly!).

I've been using GooSync for the better part of 2008 and I love it. I haven't done ActiveSync in a LONG time, thanks to this app!

Despite that cool offer, I had totally forgotten about it, and the email said the offer expired 7/31/08. I was just on their site and saw that they still quietly offer it, so I took the plunge.

Just wanted to make others aware - I know some people are of the belief that a lifetime subscription to anything in technology is a waste of time, but for the forseeable future, this is the way I am going to sync my calendar, contacts and tasks, so I consider it very much worth it.

I was hoping this was going to be an automatic thing, but the developer ceased work on it, so I'm offering up the "manual" version of surfing the forum in a mobile browser format.
Simply go to index.php?style=2 on your device and save that as a Favorite.

If you happen to get an email notifying you of an update to a topic, the link will not be mobile, but you can make it mobile in one easy step: add &style=2 to the end of the URL!

Sometimes you might find that it signs you out and requires you to sign in before you could reply - that was a bug the developer never did fix...

I am hoping someone else will work on a Mobile Forum Modification that will be automatic (detect when you are visiting via a device vs. a full desktop browser). Until then, this is all I have to offer! :)

I've had several people ask me for the CAB file that turns your LED into a flashlight (this little app comes on the Verizon XV6800).

Here is the Nilisco Flashlight 2.0 CAB file

I know personally that it works just fine on the Sprint Mogul, but as for what other HTC devices it works on, I don't know. After installing, you will have two icons in your Programs folder: flashlight and flashlight30

I mapped one of my hardware buttons to the app, and it comes in handy a LOT! Enjoy!

Have any of you tried NetFront? I have both on my Touch and prefer NetFront. Skyfire does blow Opera away though. Have any of you found a way to import your favourites into Skyfire?

This is such a cool thing to do. Watching John flash my phone (without an overcoat  ) was awesome. My device has not hiccup'd once (not one Soft Reset), and is VERY fast. I have shown it to everyone who has a WinMo device and they are all amazed. They want me to "flash" their phones now. But I keep telling them, they need to come to the meetings so they can get in on all the cool shtuff that takes place there.

John, thanks again for showing us all.

I'm glad I was able to expand everyone's knowledge of Cooking up a new ROM. Each device is slightly different, so you really do have to be careful. There is rarely an issue with flashing a ROM, but you do so at your own risk. You can revive a bricked ROM with help from websites such as PPCGeeks.com or XDA-Developers.com. The bootloader is a built-in program on your device. It may be required to update it before you can flash the device (as Shad found out).

The reason it only takes a few minutes is because you are ONLY flashing the OS ROM and not the radio/Extended ROM portion. There are three parts to a standard ROM Flash. We are only doing part one by using these kitchens.

One note on ROM revisions. You may find different versions of the base ROMs available. Microsoft releases different ROM sets for Windows Mobile devices. Sometimes an older version will work better (or faster) than a newer one. Just try it and if you don't like it, reflash it again with a different ROM.

A note regarding 'EXTENDED ROM'. Your device will STILL have the full set of files in the Extended ROM area. Those are left over from the original flashing of the device. They are the customization files that were provided by the cellular provider. You can remove those files by using File Explorer. This will free up that space so you can install other applications there. This area of memory will be retained even after a hard reset. HINT: If you don't use it to install programs, drop your CAB files there for easy reinstall later. You'll be happy that you did. It gives you about 10MB of space to use.

When selecting what you want to install, be thrifty. Install only the apps you use all the time. Programs that get updated frequently really shouldn't be put into ROM, such as GoogleMaps or LiveSearch. They are fairly small anyway.

As recommended... make sure you have backed up your contacts and any data you have on your device BEFORE flashing. Even things like custom ringtones will be lost if they are not backed up. Syncing with Outlook will backup your data, but it does not retain information such as individual ringtones per user and caller information. You can use one of the PIM backup applications in the kitchen to do so, but the first time that info will be lost. Just run it before and after doing a new flash.

WOW, what a meeting we had! We talked about so much stuff, our meeting lasted 3 hours! That would have never been possible at the Bon Air Library, so thanks again to Jeff Biggs and his generous offer to hold meetings at Peak 10 Louisville. Since the place is technically open 24/7/365, there wasn't the pressure to leave (like Bon Air imposed), and we were all having so much fun, we just kept going until 9:30!

  • REDFLY - Our feature presentation. While mainly geared toward businesses, this device has appeal to individuals as well. It takes your Windows Mobile device to the next level! I will expound on this more shortly...
  • GPSToday - A FREE app that maintains and displays a fix on your position right on your Today screen, as well as tons of other cool things (such as showing the distance to the nearest contact listed in your Contact list)!
  • Pocket PC Kitchen - John Becker gave us a live demo of how to burn a new/different ROM onto a device, thanks to the folks at Pocket PC Kitchen. He burned a custom (cooked) Windows Mobile 6.1 ROM onto John Foland's XV6700 - a device that is several years old - and it is now a screaming fast device running the latest OS! You can read more about that discussion of John's demo here in the Tips and Tricks section of the forum.
  • Cellet cases, holsters & chargers - Jeff Biggs has his Mogul attached to his waist with a Cellet holster and it works very well. We hadn't heard of this brand of cases/holsters before, so bookmark this site in case you are in the market!
  • The Definitive Guide for Microsoft Voice Command on the Kaiser/Tilt (on XDA Developers.com) - There are many scattered posts out there as to how to install and configure MS Voice Command, so XDA-Developers has brought as much information as possible together. They also offer a new tool that overcomes some of the current limitations of Voice Command. Check it out!
  • Kinoma Play - Kinoma Play is a fantasic mobile media browser. There is a free version that does a heck of a lot, and the full version ($30) does tons more. Theoretically, Kinoma Play could replace all of your other media-related applications - it does it all. Check it out!
  • Flashlight application - Some folks asked about the Flashlight application that comes on the Verizon version of the 6800. I have posted the link to the CAB file in our Tips & Tricks section of the forum. It works on most new HTC devices, and is very handy!
Some other sites for things we discussed:
  • Camera Summary - Camera Summary extracts the exif data from Jpeg images. Camera Summary is basically an online exif data extractor that provides information like: camera make & model, detailed information about how the picture was taken and even the thumbnail that was embedded in the file! While not something specific to Windows Mobile, it was still very cool to learn about this site!
  • Makeuseof.com - A site which is unique and original in what it reviews and how it does it. On makeuseof, they don't write about just any new web application that comes around, but only about ones that are COOL, FREE and USEFUL!
More coming soon! I'm piecemealing the list together!
